New Iggy

JLokay Feb 25, 2007 06:32 PM

Hey there guys....

I just got a new iggy at the shop I work at...one of our employees was getting rid of him and I decided to take him...

I have a few questions....

-Right now he is in a mesh cage, would he be ok outside in the sunlight (I live in florida) during the day and in our reptile room at night (room is a steady 78 at night)for the next couple days. Reason being is that i'm building him a proper cage. Which brings me to my next question...

-What is a good material for building his cage? Any specific kind of wood? Should I seal it or that's not neccesary?

-How much humidity do they require?

Thats it for now...

Also...I know what I am getting into, I have kept leos, beardies, and tegus....And I currently keep over 40 ball pythons (I breed them), a boa, a couple hognoses, and some pacman frogs....So I dont need a lecture of what im getting into (not saying that in a rude way)....

All help is appreciated..

And here is 2 pics of him....Needs to put a little more weight on but I dont think that will be a problem, he gobbled up some collard greens the second I put them in today....

He looks extremely healthy and his weight looks fine. Iguana's arnt known to become very obese at all my 3yr old male is so active he cant keep the weight on him. Ive had him for 2yrs and he always ate alot but diddnt get a big tummy. The way you can tell if there healthy if their legs looks chubby and there base of the tail, their shouldnt be any hip bones sticking out or you shouldnt see their leg bones. Hes a healthy litte iguana!
For cage building well i use a closet so i havent built one. But if i did i would use PVC and Plexiglass. Go to yahoo.com or google.com and search PVC "Iguana Cages". There's alot of plans and ways you can build a light yet sturdy cage out of PVC and Plexiglass. Also Iguanaden.org has PVC cage plans in their Iguana Housing sections.

Thankyou very much!!

I guess im so used to beardies, monitors, and tegus that I thought he was a bit underweight lol Guess not, which im very happy to hear.

The past 2 days he has eaten a TON of food. Mustard greens, collard greens, kale, and escarole is what he has eaten so far. How often can I give him fruits? And what kind are best?

Thanks again!

Ive read numerous times fruit shouldnt make up more than 10% of any days diet. I feed fruit every couple a days sometimes weeks. The fruits i feed most often are Diced Mango, Grapes (Seedless), and Blueberries (my guy can take them down whole). Fruits work great for treats and what your feeding sound aswesome wish my guy's appetite was as big as the little ones. Its breeding season though what can yah say..

He is absolutely beautiful. Love the bright colors of the babies. My Iggabelle is almost 4 now. For all kinds of help on cage ideas, diet variety, humidity, etc. check out the green iguana society website....www.greenigsociety.org..lots of wonderful information and another message board as well. Lots of experience helpful people there that have been there way longer than I. They helped me raise Iggabelle right. (By the way humidity doesn't need to be 90 percent but rather between 65-75 percent, as too high is a breeding ground for bacteria which would be harmful to your new green buddy) Also, being if FL is awesome for you because the natural sunlight is absolutely the best. And night temps of 75 degrees are perfect. Good luck I'm sure you'll make a great ig parent!
