Questions... Perhaps someone can answer?

Hi

I'm new to bearded dragons and don't plan on getting any until the end of September. However, I have a couple questions regarding colors and availability. I was looking for a yellow bearded dragon. Would that be gold or yellow? And also, I notice that in the classifieds there are numbers such as 1.1, what does that stand for? I notice there are crosses and such, but what I'd be interested in is a bearded dragon that's a "solid" yellow. What would I be looking for? I've done research and read several books, but they don't go in depth on color variations. I don't plan on buying from petshops at all, but I know they only come in during the late spring and throughout the summer. Do they breed and lay eggs year round?

I was planning on using a mercury vapor bulb to provide uvb. Since it is a spotlight, what should I use to to provide uva? Has people successfully kept bearded dragons on just the mercury vapor? Thanks for any informations you can give me.

Well to answer some of your questions , 1.1 means the ratio of the sexs of a group of animals. The number to the left of the . means the number of males. The number to the right means females. And some people put another period after the female number, the number to the right of the second period means unsexed or baby animals. For example 1.2.10 = 1 male, two females, and 10 babies or unsexed animals. I hope that wasnt too confusing.

As far as yellows go, well it really depends. there are so many color varities and morphs out there. You'll just have to see the parents and the pic of the exact animal you are looking for. Even then colors change so much from the time they hatch to adult hood. For a full body colored animal you are looking at spending a lot of money. Dragons den has some nice yellow sunbursts, and you can always call Rob or vickie at bearded dragons and other creatures. They Have almost everything you can think of. And just check the classified when you are ready.

I would add some florecent bulbs with the vapor bulb. For over all light intensity and to light up the entire tank. Good lighting is very important for healthy dragons.

There are a lot of breeders that have babies year round. they put some adults into burmation and take some out. That way they have dragons avaliable year round. Dragons Den and Bearded Dragons and Other Creatures both have dragons year round.

Hopefully this helps, if its confusing or if you have any more questions please post them.

peace,
nathan

it can be gold or yellow yellow tends to be what they would call the brighter of the two.. but there are all kinds of names for a yellow phase dragon these days, the most yellow i have seen is by kevin at dragons den www.dragonsdenherp.com i would check out his "sunbursts", VERY yellow, i would contact him via phone and let him know what you want, unless you live in the area you can arrange to go and hand pick your dragon, he has some beautiful dragons for certian. some breeders do have babies available all year round, i think kevin should also. Always keep your eyes on the classifieds at kingsnake also, always lots of new things daily posted there. Also www.exoticlizards.com, or scales also has yellow phase dragons, i dont know their availability but they are worth having a look at

your MVB is great for UVB, i would also add another regular bulb or florecent bulb for light intensity, UVA the brighter the better, i have 2 florecent bulbs for every enclosure to make it nice and bright.

i included a pic of my girl Gobi, she is a yellow "sandfire" dragon
