Disappointing RB #'s at expo...

coluberking25 Feb 25, 2007 11:44 PM

So I went to the reptile expo in Hamburg PA, and boy would you guys have been disappointed. There was only a handful(literally) of baby BRBs(not even a single CRB was at the show!!!)at this expo; only like 6 pretty babies. Geez there were more rattlesnakes being sold than rainbows!

By the way, I bought a pet rat(yes, a rat) at the show in case you wanted to know if I got anything.

Scott,
...This is getting close to the worst time of year to find CB Brazilian Rainbow Boas. Most of the breeders have sold out or are close to selling out their 2006 babies. The few babies that we have left will be easy to sell this summer for much more money when they have more size to them. We also hold back some because they look so nice and will help us to sell 2007 babies at shows this summer. In my case I am waiting for warmer weather so that I can ship safely before I advertise a for sale ad in the kingsnake.com classifieds.
...I have raised rats and mice and hamsters to feed to snakes and rats are far and away better pets than mice or hamsters.
...How about giving us an overall show report for the Hamburg Show. I am interested to know how many vendors and how many people actually buying animals and what sort of interesting reptiles were for sale.
Jeff

a youtube video of your rat doing tricks. A couple weeks back I stumbled upon a post you wrote and you were talking about getting a rat and all the tricks they can do. I never had any pets growing up rather than a dog, hell I won't touch a frog for crying out loud but I was wondering what kinds of tricks they do?

Rats are extremely intelligent animals. They will even learn their own names they are so smart. Tricks I have seen them do is going through doors and jumping great distances(greater than 4 feet) from one ledge to another. I have also heard they can "play basketball"(put a ball in a hoop), jump through hoops, and stand on their hind legs on command.

Currently my rat is 4 weeks old and can't do many tricks yet. I am currently trying to teach him his name. He likes me already, as is evident by his grooming my fingers.

Well Jeff, it was a very good show. There was a huge amount of vendors. As for the animals, this expo is famous for the venomous herps they sell and have on display. Two interesting herps I can recall were the baby male king cobra and an albino cottonmouth. As I mentioned before there were tons of rattlesnakes. I remember waving my hand over a cup with a western diamondback and making it rattle, being the first time I've ever seen a rattlesnake rattle. There was apparently an albino monocled cobra on display, but I didn't see it. I did see a regular monocled cobra on display. Other venomous snakes I recall seeing were rhinocerous vipers and southern copperheads. I did not see anybody purchasing any venomous snakes.

There were many non-venomous herps that were very interesting as well. They had caiman and American alligators being sold, but then again they have been at many expos I've been to. One python coming to mind that I thought was interesting was a pair of Sawu pythons, something I've only read about once ever in an old REPTILES magazine. There was even an interesting chelonian that I did not see but heard was being sold: side-necked turtles. As for an interesting lizard, a very tame crocodile monitor was on display, but not for sale.

There were even interesting non-herp animals being sold at this show as well! I saw two rather large pigeons for sale, but the more interesting animals were mammals. They had African soft-furred rats and spiny mice, two animals I have never heard of in my life!

I should mention that one thing that I found interesting(and rather irritating before I got Clubber) was that, besides the soft furred ones, there were no live rats being sold at any of the tables. The only exception was this one table(with the pigeons and spiny mice)had live rats that were pre-ordered an were supposed to be picked up at the show. Apparently the vendor heard of my irritation of trying to find a live rat(I was planning very long to buy a live rat at the show) and mentioned that she had some rats that weren't picked up and that she was willing to sell me one(I wish I could have gotten two, as you probably know, rats like the company of other rats). I delightfully accepted and came home with a cute little 4 week old hooded rat.

I went with a group of friends, and the total number of animals in the car was 6, not a single one being a reptile or amphibian.

This time of year, the selection on young animals will always be a bit slim. I know Will Bird sets up at Hamburg sometimes..
