Peruvian Rainbows - Anyone heard of this

dpj912 Feb 26, 2007 11:23 AM

I was looking through the classifieds and notices someone selling Peruvian Rainbows, they ask for 1/2 down to reserve the animals and it appears as though they are bringing them back into the US. Does anyone know or have any experience with these guys or know their reputations? They are listed as "http://www.IntenseHerp.com". Also, on the Peruvians, does anyone have any experience with them as far as requirments/temperment/coloration/ect? They seem relatively scarce and hard to come by. Thanks for the info in advance.

Dave,
....I have Peruvian Rainbows. This subspecies, Epicrates cenchria gaigei looks somewhat like the Brazilian Rainbows. Peruvians are larger heavier snakes and they have fewer and larger scales and thicker darker markings. The markings are especially noticeable on their heads. Looking at adults they look like they have bigger heavier bones. The Brazilian Rainbow Boa has a very large which extends across the northern half of Peru, including Iquitos where the only licensed captive breeder I know of in Peru lives. I talked to him several years ago and he told me that all the Rainbow Boas he was breeding were Brazilians but that he hoped to get some Peruvians from further south in the country. Most of the "Peruvians" offered for sale in the US over the last 15 years are actually Brazilian Rainbows. I have watched for real gaigei for sale for the last 15 years and in that time have only seen the real deal for sale a few times. Peruvian Rainbows like all the other Rainbow Boas can be snappy before they are tamed but are very easily tamed. I keep mine exactly like I keep my Brazilians. I like them because they are such big powerful snakes. My only problem with this subspecies is that I have never successfully bred them.

This one is an 8 year old female. She weighs 11.5 pounds. I have measured a few older Brazilian Rainbows that were longer than this snake but none that weighed obver 11 pounds.
