Linoleum in snake cages

lichanura Feb 26, 2007 11:34 AM

I am trying to find something that is easily cleaned and will not stain a large (6' by 2.5') wooden cage. More sanitary also. I am thinking of Linoleum. It gives of a chemical residue odor that seems to finally go away. Any experience or thoughts on Linoleum as a cage floor substrate?

I have used it, but instead of gluing, I used small finish nails and a dab of silicone over the nail heads. This seemed to help with the gas-out time, since there was no glue to cure. Make sure you caulk the edges so no spilt liquids or other stuff can get under it.

Thanks for your response. It it a real snug fit so I am not even thinking of nailing or glueing it down. Just plan to silicone the edges to keep liquids out.

Vinyl flooring may be safer. I don't think it off-gasses hardly at all, and you can cut it exactly to the size you need, so there are no funky gaps.

Not to be rude, but you do understand that Vinyl flooring and Linoleum are essentially the same product, kinda the difference between facial tissue and Klennex.

Just thought I would point that out.

I have used scrap vinyl flooring, possibly linoleum, and have liked it quite a bit. I would let it offgass on it's own before putting it down. Cut it to size and then let it offgass while hanging (not rolled up or laying down).

I have heard that the linoleum brand is one of the worst when it comes to the use of petroleum products and offgassing.

I put the roll of Linoleum in my reptile room two weeks ago to make sure that it off-gassed as much as possible. Thanks for your responses. I just wanted to make certain that there are no bad experiences with Linoleum out there. The price was right. About $18.00 for a 6 by 9 foot remnant at Home Depot.
