Tim,

Those are some awesome snakes!!!

I just bought my first JCPs back in January. Both are CBB from different vendors. The male has a yellow stripe that is almost 95% complete for his whole body.

My question is regarding their temperaments. My female was nippy at first but in 4 weeks of handling and she hasn't struck in 2 weeks and I can handle her with my hands very confidently.

The male was purchased and he used to strike like a machine gun... strike...strike...strike. He has calmed down a lot, but he still coils to strike when you approach his cage and he reacts with a "bite first, ask questions later". He doesn't strike as often any more, but he still strikes once per handling. I am using gloves and holding him once per day (except he gets a 3 day break after eating)

Do you think there is a chance to getting him to relax completely where he won't be so prone to bite? I have calmed nervous snakes to become incredibly docile ones, but I've never seen one who likes to strike this much.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

The female is blue and the male ate yesterday so hopefully I'll be able to get some good pics later this week.

Hey IMAN..
JCPs are great snakes.. and like all species, there are occassionally some that are just an aggressive individual. As a species though, I find them to be a bit nippy as young snakes, but with some handling and persistance.. they settle down. All 4 of mine are puppy dog time.. but each of them were very nippy when I first got them.

If it is a small snake.. I would drop the gloves. You may get bit a few times, but it shouldn't be bad.

Thank for sharing the pics Tim. I liked everything but the jcp's were great and the two turtles eating salad was OFF THE CHAIN!!! Was that Olive Garden to go hahaha What kind of snake did you pick up in Arlington, it kinda looks like it started eating a glowstick and absorbed the color-friggin' awesome
Bob

Thanks Bob.. I love my redfoot tortoises.. they are great!

The glowstick snake is a Aspidites ramsayi / woma python..

Hey Tim, Cool stuff, I really like two of those 2006 males, I am a real sucker for those bullseyes.

That eclipse female was a real sweetie when she left here, what did you do to her?

Thanks for the other pics, I do like to see other stuff.

Thanks Dave.. I am really proud of a few of them... the female that is so blue also has great bullseyes too.. Unfortunately, it is hard to tell that right now.

As for the girl I got from you, she is fine once I have her out, but while she is in the tub, she is a fireplug!

Tim,
Great looking snakes. What substrate are you using? I'm about to do my quarterly change out and I like the look of the shredded wood versus the Orchid bark I've been using. Looks like it really soaks up the moisture.
Paul

TimOsborne Feb 28, 2007 09:25 PM

Hey Paul.. The substrate is cypress mulch. It is great at keeping the humidity up.. Get it at your local home improvement store. Make sure it is pure cypress wood and bark. Runs me about $3 for 2cubic foot.
