Where are the NJ snakes??

dravenxavier Aug 11, 2003 05:07 PM

This is frustrating. It's been a few years since I've gone looking for snakes in NJ, so I decided to give it a try today. I left at about 8 this morning and stopped at about 5. In places I'd found plenty of snakes before, and in new areas that seemed perfect, there was NOTHING. I found I think 2 Northern Two-Lined Salamander larvae and a baby American Toad. That's it. I live in Monmouth County...does anyone know an somewhere around there where snakes can be found? I'm really looking to find small woodland snakes like browns, ringnecks, and redbellies. You can just email me at DravenXavier@aol.com if you don't feel like posting a location on the forum. Thanks.

I have been seeing snakes a lot this year, and lots of box turtles as well. In Wharton State forest this past weekend we saw a rather large and friendly black rat. Way down in cumberland county on Sunday saw another large black rat crossing the road, the car going the other way nicked it and by the time we turned around he was gone so hopefully he wasnt hurt bad. Also on that same road we saw 2 box turtles in 100 yards, about my 15th boxer this year, I havent seen this many in the last 3 years total. Also by me in North brunswick I see on a regular basis black racers, about 3 different ones that live around an old telephone pole pile. I guess lots of rain = lots of herps.
Be cool

Do you know any good places to find any small woodland snakes like ringnecks, redbellies, or browns? And unfortunately, so much rain actually killed my herping in a few locations :-P rivers that I usually find lots of water snakes were completely flooded (well, at least enough to cover the rocky banks I find the snakes in). I guess I'll just hope it doesn't rain much more this week and try again this coming Monday (since it's my only day off). I tried Washington Rock Park and it looked PERFECT for snakes...but alas...no snakes...just big worms, lots of ants and termites, slugs, and a mole (all the food, just no snakes!) I'll just keep looking around. Thanks though...it at least tells me there's some life around here lol.
