Substrates!!!!!

CorruptedBam Aug 11, 2003 05:15 PM

OK I know there has been some talk... but I am still going to ask! What is the best substrates for leopard geckos? I am thinking of going with sand and then just feeding them in a seperate tank...... Is that a good idea?

geckos don't always eat in seperate tanks. they seem to like eating in their home where they're comfortable. i used T-rex calci-sand for nearly 3 years with no problems. i only stopped because it got to expensive. paper towels are the easiest to use, and safest. repti carpet is pretty easy too, and just as safe.

your head will collapse, but there's nothing in it, and you'll ask yourself, "where is my mind"

A lot of people on here seem to be using tiles with sand between them like grout.. I'm using calci-sand at the moment but like the look of the tiles so am thinking of going that way..

A good friend of mine lost a gecko to calci-sand (impaction) and I almost did but luckily she survived and is fine now. It isn't 100% going to happen but I personally won't take that risk with my gecko's lives. Sand isn't even a large part of the leos natural ennvironment so I wouldn't use it.

I didn't like sand, because it was hard to eliminate the poop smell even though I'd regularly scoop out the poop.
