My understanding is that the main taxonomic difference between Coluber constrictor constrictor (Northern Racer) and C. c. priapus (Southern Racer) has to do with the morphology of the hemipenenes. Otherwise the two are very similar and one would normally rely on the locality to make an identification.
You may want to invest in a good field guide for a precise description of the visible characteristics that differentiate the subspecies. I can highly recommend Snakes of North America Eastern and Central Regions by Alan Tennant and Reptiles and Amphibians of Eastern/Central North America by Roger Conant.
You may want to consider other Racer subspecies that are more distinct to forstall any confusion as to identity. Personally, I would like to work with the Blue (C c. foxi) or Buttermilk (C. c. anthicus) varieties, but I don't have the resources at this time.
Good luck with your project.
