Still Gravid?

SenorSnake Feb 27, 2007 09:07 AM

A few days ago I posted that one of our females gave birth 1 month prematurely to 5 neonates (none survived). I was contemplating feeding her, but when I went in to check on her she still seems to be thermoregulating, and has a body temp of 87.5-88. Could she still be carrying other babies to term? Has this ever happened to anyone before? If she could be gravid still I don't want to feed her incase it caused more premature birth. Any opinions or experience with this?

in my opinion she is still gravid and maybe she gave the premies because she has bin eating to much or to big lately.
please don,t feed her and wait for her to drop the rest of her offspring.

again,,,,,just my opinion.

I was thinking the same thing. I didn't want to post it cuz this forum is ruthless but I thought you mentioned she took a small rat every three weeks for awhile correct? Maybe she needed a little room and didn't have it. I'm sure eating a couple of rats would be great for pregnancy but they can months without eating assuming they were healthy enough for breeding. Only an opinion and I know absolutely nothing about breeding snakes so don't take nothing to heart. Go TOFU!!!!

I'm going with the other two posters. She shouldn't need to be fed while she is gravid or during breeding if she was in good health before hand.
Was there any feces that came with the babies? I would be concerned that a bowel movement pushed out a few babies early.

Thank you for the responses. It is a possibility, I had heard that you could feed small meals to a pregnant female, but I don't think i'll be doing that anymore. Thank you all for the advice and opinions!

Sometimes they need it. I know people have had females die after giving birth because they had no energy left.
However I wonder how likely it is for a gravid female in the wild to feed? Since she would likely be sitting still and moving little to keep warm during the pregnancy.
