Does it ever happen that the male only gets one of his hemipenes inserted in the female and does that count as a breeding? Will he still be able to fertilize the female?

That's an interesting question because,I always thought they used one hemipene anyway, the one closest to side they line up to the female. Jeff
Right...it almost always happens that way. In fact, I don't think I've ever heard of it ever being the case of a male using both at once.

All of the info I have seen says that males only use 1 hemipenis at a time. Frankly, I don't believe there's room for two!
Anyone ever notice if their males favor one or the other? From what I've read, some species will alternate from side to side.
Cheers!

funny you say that b/c lastnight i had another hook up. my cal king pair and i didnt know which side was which b/c he hooked up to her backwards. so the tails were going in opposite directions as oppossed to the usual same direction. but i know when he finally let go it was HUGE and purple. and of course when i put him back in his tank he HAD to rub some of the "yellow juice" on me. i felt so loved- NOT just really grossed out and washed my hands lke 10 times.

Only one is used.. And, i am willing to bet that there has never been documatation of both being used at the same time..
Good Luck!

I was just wondering because normally when I witness a mating, both snakes are real still, only moving their tails a bit. In this last breeding, the female was playing real hard to get. When the male was finally able to mate her, she rattled her tail the whole time, and both snakes moved around. I took pics of the lock, and I am sure he had her, it was just weird to see all the movement. I thought maybe he only had her part way and that is why she moved around so much and rattled her tail.
