Almost spring in W TX too!

PHRatz Feb 27, 2007 10:31 AM

It's been spring like here too. Been in the high 70s and I've had a busy few days.
I have Shell E eating her normal diet again so she's all over that respiratory thing. She's feeling just fine again YAY.
I lost my sick rat then my nebulizer came by UPS the very next day. Of course I'll get use out of it later I know.

Our sulcata laid more eggs on Sunday, oy.
I dug those up yesterday, 27 this time. We have a grand total of 92 eggs since Oct.
YIKES! We never wanted her to lay eggs or have offspring. We don't really even know if they're fertile or not.
My vet incubated clutch #1 & they all collapsed. She has clutch #2 as well & 4 have collapsed.
The rest of them... I'm not going to be party to bringing into the world a huge number of cute babies who end up unwanted like their mother and get tossed out like garbage so I dug up the rest of the eggs and put them on my backlot. Yeah that's the way to attract coyotes, foxes & skunks lol! Something ate them all.
If any of the eggs my vet has hatch, there'll be so few they will have homes but if they don't then none will hatch & that's that.

Since it's almost spring I bought 2 rose bushes for my boxie pen. Of course I plan to plant them in a way that the boxies won't get hurt by thorns. I want the roses for tortoise food.
I plan to go to a plant nursery very soon & try to fill in the rest of the pen. I can't wait to get started!

I planted two mini roses in my Desert Torts' grazing area. One loves the flowers and the leaves, and he just plows through the plant to get them. He must have really tough hide. He especially loves the white and red spotted flowers- they love anything white.

We planted spineless cactus for the tortoise but fenced it off so she wouldn't destroy the whole thing before it got established. Then she went right through the fence and ate ALL she wanted one day which is what prompted us to re-fence the whole yard. LOL
We have a white plastic lattice around the cactus now & that's actually where Hobo the male box turtle is burrowed right now.
My plan since the box turtle pen was finished in the fall is to grow a lot of cover plants for them but to make sure they are also edible plants so that the tortoise can eat the foods but she can't get into the pen herself to destroy the plants.
Our tortoise goes for green, red, pink, yellow colors the most.. I've learned never to wear those colors of socks when I'm around her.
Today we're supposed to have high winds with gusts up to 60mph so there's a good chance I'm not going to be doing any planting today.

I've learned never to go barefoot or wear sandals in the turtle pen.

The weather has been nice here (W OK) lately too, though it looks like it's going to get cool again the next few days
I imagine it's going to get windy this afternoon too.

oh yeah.. lol years ago I used to polish my toenails & walk barefoot all the time.
I learned a long time ago not to do that anywhere near a box turtle!!
LOL

So I started wearing shoes & socks then discovered I have to be careful with the sock color.
They're all too funny!

Someone from California was supposed to be sending me spineless cactus pads, but I haven't gotten them yet. I've collected spined pads and removed the spines and the torts love them- but what a pain.

I put my Florida Boxie who had pneumonia when he was dumped off on me out in the pen for a while yesterday, but brought him back in for the night. I'm going to gradually wean him to staying out.

Florida (Krusty) buried himself in the hibernaculum tonight- so he's staying out! Also, my cactus pad arrived- the thing is huge! I am thinking of planting it in a pot, not in the ground...

Not a bad idea about planting it in a pot.. when the cactus gets bigger you could put it in the ground.
When we bought ours we got it from a plant nursery that was going out of business & it was on sale.
Then I told them why I wanted it & the sad story of our tortoise so the guy helping us picked up a pile of loose pads & said "here take these because you can put them in the ground & they will grow too"
I thought that was the nicest thing.. he was right. They have grown & sprouted new pads.
