Pink Insulation Foam

JoeEdmark Feb 27, 2007 08:04 PM

A friend of mine was thinking about using pink insulation foam in some of his lizard enclosures. I myself have doubts about the material in anything but snake cages. In what ways could you make the material hard and safe enough for use in say, a tegu cage.

Alright I have been absent awhile and lurked here and there but maybe I should stick my head in here a little more often as the common sense trend has seriously gone away.

By the way this is not a personal attack.

By Pink Insulatation I assume you mean Extruded Polysterene. If that is the case it can be used for any number of different cage construction techniques, however never alone.

It most certainly needs to be coated in something or covered with something. A fine example would be using it as structure for a background and covered in concrete or tile grout. It is possible to take that idea one step further and make a cage entirly out of polysteren and coat the entire cage in a hard shell. Like a big M&M.

Another example is how my Iguana's cage (an old project that I have been dragging my feet on) is constructed. For that I basically made a frame work of material with foam insulation filling the cavity, than the whole panel is skinned with FRP on the inside and hardboard on the outside. By no means am I recommending this as it is not yet complete therefor un-tested. It is however another idea.

Best of Luck
