Adult Mali diet ?

roadspawn Feb 27, 2007 10:14 PM

Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Mali adult male diet:
veggiespeas-green beans-carrots-corn-lima beans)
leafy greensromaine-collard greens-mustard greens-kale)
flowerscats claw-nasturtium-rose-pumpkin/squash-dandelion)
beans: (spilt peas-lentils-navy beans)
seeds: (millet-sorghum)

My question is:
How often of each? Is there a staple diet, in which the rest is added? If so, how often and what. If you could include a feeding schedule I would appreciate it. Thanks

Mine receive baby bok choy, collard greens, mustard greens or various other greens every day or every other day. I feed them cockatiel pellet food, both LaFeber's and Zupreem at least once a week. Finch seeds are given at least once a week too. Not huge amounts maybe half a teaspoon or so.

I also feeds them alfalfa sprouts and crunchy sprouts(these are store bought and are peas, lentils, and a couple other types of legumes.) about 2 times a week. During the summer I give them hibiscus as they come into bloom. My female loves it more then anything. I also occasionally feed them bee pollen now. Maybe 2-3 times a month, and only small amounts, maybe 10-15 small pellets.

I would definitely get some different bedding for your uro though. I'm sure he ingests some of that bark on occasion.

Thanks for the reply. I just got him today. I am planning on changing the substrate. What would you recommend?

I use Carefresh. Its a recycled newspaper based bedding. There are lots of opinions about what is best though. I like it because it absorbs all liquid when they go poop, and its very easy to change out. I change the bedding about once every 4-6 weeks.

Personally I hate using sand. It weighs too much and changing it all out is a real pain in the rear. Plus one of my uros got a nasty tail infection from using playsand.

I use a base of dark leafy greens: endive, escarole, and dandelion for the most part, and rotate in others like bok choy, nappa cabbage, etc, for variety. Everything else is more of a side dish. For your veggies, mostly you can avoid the carrots and corn. Choose winter squashes instead - I shred them with a cheese grater. Mine get seeds and ground dry grasses most days, lentils and/or crushed beans occasionally. Flowers come when in bloom - I grow several kinds.
