Mandarin Ratsnake, advice?

styric Feb 28, 2007 01:47 AM

There is a captive bred (one of the first in this country) Mandarin Ratsnake for sale at our local breeder. It's probably one of the most beautiful snakes I've had the pleasure of seeing

My question, if a total beginner took interest in the snake, what would you say to them? It looks quite high maintenance and difficult to keep even for an experienced herper.

I'm just not sure where to stand here on this one...

Check out ratsnake forums. They can guide you. There are folks there who are keeping (and breeding) mandarins. The fact that it is captive bred will be a big plus. Yes, they ARE beautiful. Duffy

I agree to ask this question on the ratsnake forum.

A friend has some CB specimens. He told me that they are very hardy animals as long as you provide the following conditions:

1. Don't let them get dehydrated. Either provide a humid hide or soak weekly or whatever.

2. Don't heat them too high - provide a cool area in the low 70s (or lower) and a high no more than low 80s.

3. Don't over-handle them.

By following the above, his are doing very well.
