Problem eye

kilo Feb 28, 2007 08:09 AM

I have not posted in a while and have noticed a problem with my normal male. He seems to have not shed one eye. At first I tried to help him but could not get it off. He is about three years old maybe 7-8 feet long. I have tried keeping the humidity up. He shedded again with out sheeding the eye does anyone know what could help this. Temp is thermostat regulated and humidity is done with hose spraying. I have a fairly large enclosure at 6'x6' and a large female around 11' and five years old. Any help would be great.

Hi Kilo, welcome back.

If you can't get the apparent eyecap off by simply rubbing across it with a damp finger tip then maybe there is a larger underlying problem and not a retained eyecap at all. In this case a vet visit would be in order. If there is no discoloration to the eye and it is simply a retained eyecap you should have no problem sliding it off sideways and out. I have to do this all the time and it's no big deal. If it doesn't come free right away then it is likely to be something else.

Try soaking him for 15-20. then maybe take your finger acrossed his eye.

I have had luck by spraying the eye with water rather than soaking. This assures that the eye gets wet rather than your burm holding her head out of the water. Spray it every ten minutes or so for about an hour and then try to run your finger across it. I've also had good luck rubbing from the back of the eye forward. Doing those two has worked very well for me. Hope this helps!

i use saline solution- like for dry eyes and those q tips with the extra long stick and only fuzzy on one end. it seems to work much faster than spraying and since soaking doesnt do much good unless they stay under- i think it works gr-8!

Hi, this is my first time being on here and what funny is my burm just got rid of her eye caps. They were on there from a pervious shed and I tried everything to help her get them off. I tried soaking but she didn't like staying under and I tried useing tape but she didn't like that either. So I left her go and I was going to wait until she was ready to shed the next time and then I was going to help her but about two days ago the eye caps got so dried up that they just fell off by themselves, so this might take some waiting and they might come off by themselves... Good luck with everything and tell us what happens...
