Busy feeding week....

rainbowsrus Feb 28, 2007 12:50 PM

Funny how I can figure out how many rodents to produce but don't really pay attention to how many rodents I "process" every week. In the last two days I fed 31 Mice (hoppers) to the 2006 baby BRB's and 45 rats to the older BRB's and Boa constrictors. Nobody had "seconds" and several didn't even have firsts!

How long does it take for a rat to attain adult BRB feeding size (med/large)?

I want to know in grams Dave if your taking requests. Paul here is a link to rodentpro's rat size page

After most of my snakes can take adult mice I am gonna start having some rat sex myself.

I don't weigh them, I just eyeball the snake middle and pick out an appropriate sized meal. Typical is about the girth of the snake. Now starting breding I go a bit smaller and after breeding I offer much smaller prey items.

You nasty boy...

Darn good question....Answer is I'm not really sure

I just keep my growout rack populated and take whatever size I need for each individual snake. With the largest ones going to the BCI's. I plan on 3 or 4 litters a week depending on how full the growout rack is. I also adjust for BRB timing, aka slow down a little for breeding season and ramp back up before birthing season. Those females are powerfull hongry after giving birth.

For my growout rack I keep mostly Males. Only have a tub or two of females and those are mostly for fresh breeders. Males always get larger quicker. So when feeding a weanling small or med I feed females off first.

I believe it's about 10 or 12 weeks for a mostly full grown male rat. They will get larger over time but that's where they gain most of their size.

Paul,
...Most of my adult Rainbows get fed 3 to 4 ounce rats that are around 4 weeks old. When they are hungry they will eat 3 or 4 of them that size. At 6 to 8 weeks old the rats weigh around 6 ounces. They grow fastest for the first 6 to 10 weeks and then slow down. Like Dave said the males do grow faster than the females.
