impulse adoption!

lele Aug 11, 2003 07:19 PM

Hi gang,

Well, I went into a local chain pet store today to grab some kitty litter and OF COURSE I was dragged over to the reptile area. So I was "just looking" and the guy comes over to see if I need help and I mentioned what had happened and that I was just getting my Herp Dose for the day. Then he said "have you thought about a gecko?" I replied "at some point I will probably get one - always been intrigued by the african fat-tails." He said, "We found a baby house gecko roaming around the back and if you want him you can have him for free." So guess what!

This thing is tiny! An inch s/v! She(?) is just precious! So I got a bag of vita-sand (have to check out the gecko forum for more husbandry), set up a little home for her in a big old "penny candy" glass jar (for those of you who rememebr penny candy! LOL), water, bark and stuff and some of those many FF I have left.

OK, here's the rest. I also walked out with three anoles. One Bahamian and two green. That part was not entirely impulsive b/c I did want to fill my vivarium. I'd been thiniking about some frogs, but when I saw the anoles I was swept back to my childhood since these were my first herps ever. I was just looking at Bahama and I think she might be a Bahama Mama! I think I see eggs in her belly! Oh No!

Well, I had to give you all the news before I went hopping over the other forums. Don't worry, you can't get rid of me that easily! I have become very attached to many of you and will still be here for plant and insect advice if needed

I must say, it is a little weird looking into the setup and seeing these three, but it was a lot harder looking at it empty
BTW, PetHobbyist contacted me about lighting candles for Makeda, Kaiya and Bart! I had no idea that they had something like this -did you?? The Candle lighting ceremony for them will be tonight (see link below)...oh, I'm getting all weepy again...

later,
lele

I have crested geckos in my old vivarium.
I am lighting my candle right now for your little chams.

Thanks, Sonia.

I have a gecko question (haven't checked out forum yet) the guy in store said they will drink from a bowl, the care sheet says must mist. Are all geckoes the same re: care? Can you tell me how yours are set up and any online caresheets will be great.

btw, I considerd some beardies - boy are they handsome animals! and the ones they had looked quite healthy (surprisingly(!)) but don't have the right setup. Would love to get them someday. They were selling for $60. I wouldn't buy them from a PetCo but wondering about $$ for future reference.

thanks!

Beardies are everything that chameleons are NOT.
They are social, live to be about 15 years, and enjoy being held.
They are a semi-desert dwelling species, eating mostly insects as young, and going to a mostly vegetarian diet (80% veggies, 20% insects) when they're older.
They grow to about 18" total length, but the size is somewhat variable, depending on 'variety' (ie sandfire vs German giant).
$60 is about average price. You can find them for a lot less, or a lot more. Depends on breeding, color, etc...
There's a beardie group sponsored by Yahoo!, I believe it's 'Pogona' or something.
I'm by no stretch a beardie expert, just love these guys! I think you will too!
Lele, I'm glad you're getting something for your empty vivarium.

I love mine I have two. They are really hardy even though I am having trouble with mine. (They are much better but are still not totally out of the woods)
They love contact with their owners and have tons of personality
My female Saffron loves to cuddle up under my chin.
Here she is. I paid LOTS more than $60.00 for her due to the color she is. She was also the largest female in her clutch and is a 18 inches long at around 10 months old. When she is older and feeling her old self again I will breed her with my male.

That is the best news I have heard today!

The candle lighting got me all choked up. Tomorrow I will light one for your chams. Here's to all our friends who have crossed the Rainbow Bridge! *lifting glass of wine to them*

Blessings, Lele,
