How long....

phiber_optikx Feb 28, 2007 11:02 PM

How long do males need to be out of brumation before they can breed? I had pulled my female black rat out of brumation due to health issues about 3 weeks ago (she is better) and she is now blue. I pulled my male out tonight when I noticed it. How long does he need to "prep"? Also, how long is the breeding window for females once they shed?

You should give your male a week to warm up and then offer him a meal. It would be best to feed him every 4 days so you have a better chance of getting in a few meals before she finish's her shed. I don't know how long the window is but the sooner the better. As long as he is in good shape too!
Good luck,
Ryan

He is in great shape other than he is a little small for her. He is just over 3' and I haven't weighed him yet but I estimate about 250 grams. She on the other hand is 4'7" and when last weighed (a few months before brumation) was 2.2 lbs.
I hope he isn't intimidated and will "do his thing." I don't know if it is just "something in the water" but every snake I brumated actually put on weight. My female corn put on 80 grams at least.

A female stays in season from her first shed after warming till her next shed. No cooling is required of the male.

I like to get at least 4-6 good meals in them first after a 2 week warm up. Watch for that first shed of the female.
