Copulation pre-shed ??

FunkyRes Mar 01, 2007 01:35 AM

Got a question.
My snakes came out of brumation. Two females (my larger girls) have been eating like pigs - my males have been eating, but not like pigs.

My 4' MBK has been unusually active last few days, trying to get out of his caging. The caging above him holds a 4' female cal king.

My 4' male Cal King is across the room. He's been staying in his hide. But I had to clean some stinky poops out of the female enclosure, so I put her in the brand new vision rack (just arrived today, built but not ready for use as I have to wire it) while I cleaned her cage, and that rack is right next to the 4' male Cal King. Now he is trying to get out of his cage.

I was going to wait until after her first shed to attempt copulation, but do you think maybe she already is giving off the phermones letting the males know a breedable female is nearby?

Well, I put the two cal kings together - shall see what happens.
He sure is licking her a lot, which is what he did last year before he made his move - but last year, he lost interest the first try and I didn't try again until after her shed (when they did the deed).

Nope - the male was interested but did not make a move. He started to align his body with hers but he never grabbed her neck and she moved away when he did. So I'll let her shed first.

I put two Goini together yesterday for about twenty minutes just to stimulate them a bit and see what would happen. The male was tounge flicking and exploring but the female was bucking him off. They are about two weeks out of cooling, no shed yet. I was just trying to get them “thinking” about it for the right time, which will be pretty soon. I fed them in the morning, introduced later in the afternoon. I was a little worried about doing that the same day as a feed, but I was watching like a hawk. Do most usually introduce the day after a feed or what?

Try after their fist shed, seems to put out more phermones, you know that love potion #9!

Your males will usually be ready before your females. There is no harm in putting them together, I have had a few breedings pre shed. But most of the time the female just wont let the male mate for a few more weeks.

Keep in mind that shedding and ovulating are not directly related. It is convenient for us that ovulation tends to induce a shed at somewhere around that period, but every snake is different.
