Anyone ever PIT Tagged an 18" Ratsnake?? Please help...

Jolliff Aug 11, 2003 08:39 PM

I picked up my PIT Tags today & nearly fell over when I seen the size of the syringes. Are they kidding me?? Has anyone put a PIT Tag in an 18" Ratsnake and had it survive?? I am serious - have they?? I would like to hear if you have. I can understand other snakes w/ more girth @ that size but whoever thought up this f*cked up law certainly was not aware of the girth of a Blk Ratsnake @ that size. The syringe is 12mm!! There is no way a snake could survive being gouged by this thing. I am so distraught!! I swear I am going to sue Fish & Game if my snakes die!! This has to be some form of ANIMAL CRUELTY!!! I would like to hear from anyone who has lost snakes from this or actually succeeded in tagging a Ratsnake @ this size....

Small snakes like that are best handled with the tag being inserted by hand. Or even better you could wait for the snake to GROW before you do it. As long as you have the tag ID and the snake even if DNR showed up you can always use that as an excuse why you held off the surgury. And who is really going to spend the time to make sure your tag is there...just dont take the snake out and show it off or use it as a demo for anything.Shoot, at 18"noone is likely to be able to ID it to species anyway!Jeff

The law states that you don't have to PIT tag the animal until it reaches a certain size. I can't remember if it's 4 or 6 feet, but 18 inches is definately exempt.

That is incorrect according to the Ohio DNR website:

A unique passive integrated transponder (PIT) tag must beimplanted under the skin of all live native snakes and turtles held in captivity when the animal reaches the following size:
• snakes with a snout-vent length of 18 inches or greater

• turtles with a straight carapace length of four or more inches

An 18 inch snake would definitely NOT be exempt. Just wanted to point that out.

& the syringe is 12mm!!??

Hate to nit pick but a 12mm syringe? Hardly ever see a 9mm bullet they don't make 12mm syringes. lol Granted the pit tag ones are BIG but they aren't nearly that big.

They are nearly the same diameter as my 20" ALBINO Blk Ratsnake. My Vet. wouldn't even consider trying to tag them & apparently they are the smallest gauge AVID offers.

12 millimeters is only about half an inch.

That is a very short needle. Is someone getting mm's confused with cm's? A centimeter is ten millimeters. A 12cm needle would be about four-point-75 inches.
