Hidden Virus Sent Through Mailing Lists .... READ!! IMPORTANT!!!

LeosAnonymous Aug 11, 2003 08:43 PM

I just received this email from a previous customer of mine... while this virus was not in my system I thought I would post the email here so you all can check yours.

Here is the email:
____________________________________________________________________

just found out I received a virus that automatically is passed through
Email address books. Since you are in my address book, you will
probably
Find it in your computer, too. The virus (called jdbg.exe) is not
detected
by Norton or McAfee Antivirus systems. The virus sits quietly for 14
Days before damaging the system. It is sent automatically by
'messenger' and
by address book, whether or not you sent e-mail to your contacts.

Here is how to check for the virus and how to get rid of it.
PLEASE DO THIS ASAP:
1. Go to Start, then click your 'Find' or 'Search' option
2. In the folder option, type the name... jdbgm
3. Be sure to search your C Drive and all the sub folders
and any other drives you may have
4. Click 'Find Now'
5. The virus has a teddy bear icon with the name jdbgmgr.exe
Do not open it!
6. Go to Edit (on the menu bar) and choose "Select All"
to highlight the file without opening it.
7. Now go to File (on the menu bar) and select delete. It
will then go to the recycle bin. If you find the virus, you
must contact all the people in your Address Book so
that they may eradicate the virus from their own
address books.

To do this:
1. Open a new e-mail message
2. Click the icon Address Book or Contacts next to 'TO'
3. Highlight every name and add to "BCC"
4. Copy this message and paste to e-mail

hey ross, I believe this is a hoax. I've seen this before and asked some of our IT people at work, and they told me that all systems have it. I ran a search on my system that found it, but it's only a 15kb file. I don't think that's big enough to be a virus. Great of you to share with the group though.

Thanks for the info.

I actually didn't find it in my system, maybe I typed the name in wrong or something?

Either way thanks for the heads up, first time I have heard of this... better safe than sorry I guess. =)

I get at least 1 warning about a virus that norton/mcafee won't pick up a week.
every time I get one I just type in the name of it or the file it affects in google and it always takes me to the symantec website (or something similar) where it explains the hoax.
I don't think that file is too important, but if it was just imagine how many people would have fubar'ed computers because of the scare.

the best thing to do is update your virus definitions every couple of days if you're really worried about viruses.

if I don't make any sense its 3:45 and I just woke up for no apparent reason other than being too hot/humid
