Anatomy question

darkbloodwyvern Mar 01, 2007 09:26 PM

For those who have had delt a lot with rattlesnakes and cobras- I want to draw a hissing cobra, but cannot find images of the inside of a cobra's mouth. Does their teeth and inside their mouth look similar to rattlesnake's mouths and teeth? I can find lots of rattlesnake fang antomy, but very little on cobras. please let me know if cobras have any really different features with their teeth or the soft tissue of the mouth. thanks!

I am not an expert on the anatomy but elapids have fixed front fangs that are more towards the front of the mouth and they are smaller than a rattlesnakes. Rattlesnkes are more on the side and can fold up. Hope this helps.

that is very helpful, thank you very much. i am trying to design a cobra logo and don't want all the herp people to laugh when they see it, heh. I think i may post it here just for critique to make sure it doesn't look too off once it is done!

thanks so much!

Here are a couple pics I found through Google Images. They may help.

Mozambique Spitting Cobra (Naja mossambica)

Juvenile Forest Cobra (Naja melanoleuca)

Closeup of some species of spitters' fang groove

And the skull of some cobra species

Check ebay for cobra taxidermy-there are a few sellers selling stuffed monocleds, some with open mouths. One seller(I think implorasnakeskin) usually includes pictures of the mouths in the listings. Granted, it's a dead snake and not a live one but you might find one that will work if you need a head-on picture.

hi there,
that seller has some nice images, i will definately use a few head shots for reference. Taxidermy snakes always look a little silly to me, but they have good open mouths and i can see the teeth pretty well on a few. The ones implorasnakeskin sells seem to be pretty well preserved.
thanks for the info!
