mean soaking issue

OKReptileRescue Mar 01, 2007 11:16 PM

A friend of mine has a collection of burmese pythons- one of which recently got a resp. infection. he's about 13 ft. pretty slender and fairly handleable. the meds the vet gave him are really hard on the snakes kidneys- so the vet told him to soak the snake for 30 min. or so after giving the shots- problem is- the snake doesn't so much agree with that idea. he's too strong to go in a large storage tote- he can push the lid right off, he HATES the bath tub- we've tried different temps of water and a combo of other things. as soon as he hits the water he turns into rage and fury until he's back in his cage. he hisses, strikes, throws coils around arms, legs, the toilet, the sink and anything else thats available at the time. I've never had this problem myself- this is the first snake that i've ever seen NEVER in the water bowl soaking and very rarely drinks. we gave another injection yesterday and we both sat on the side of the tub. my friend held his head and i held his body in the water. we only made it about 15 min. anyone have a suggestion to get him the 30 min. soak he needs without getting seriously injured????

One approach would be to get a tall plastic trash can with a lid that latches securely (or rig up a way to secure it). Cut a fairly small hole in the lid, put the snake in first and then add the water...
