Outdoor Caging

bighurt Mar 02, 2007 02:15 PM

As the weather turns better I have been toying with the notion to build some outdoor enclosures for the 6 months of fair weather we get in the far North. Unfortunatly I we plan on selling our home in the next year so anything I do needs to be realativly temporary. I have scanned the forum and sean some incredable outdoor enclosures but I think I need something a little more modular and not so beefy, but it does need to hold some strong lizards. Any suggestions would be great as well as anything I may be overlooking as far as details I had planned on heated hides in conjunction with traditional basking spots.

Thanks

I have moved with cyclura, multiple times. The one cage that lasted the longest(4 moves) was made of redwood 2x4's with PVC coated screen. It was 10'Lx11'W x6'H and held togather on the corners by lag bolts, and metal "L" brackets. Each 11' side consisted of 2 units that were joined with simpson tie straps and lag bolts. The top was 3 units of pvc pipe with wire screen. The screen was connected to the PVC with electric tie straps. The PVC was painted for extra UV protection. It is best keep the wood off the ground, bricks or cinderblocks were used to acheive this at various times. The bottom was lined with wire screen. This cage was heavy and cumbersome to move, but lasted. Our last professional move omitted any yard items, but we found that they took it anyways as they wanted a good recommendation at the completion of the move. This is probably not what you have in mind, but hopefully it gives you some ideas. Good luck.

Actually that is similar to what I had envisioned minus the cider blocks, but I thought about during a version of stucco on the bottom of the sections to hold back dirt as well as weatherproof the base. The rest of the wood structure I had planned to paint. It is still in the idea stage so I thank you for a fresh opinion I will keep your words in my mind as I develope it further. We don't have axcess to redwood up here just ceder, so I will have to stick with pine.
