what are the chances?

snakito Mar 02, 2007 02:31 PM

that my rainbows have bred? I remember i think it was dave or jeff who posted his rainbows are more of a wham bam thank you mam snakes and dont see copulation all that often if at all. as to where the other boas ride each other around and like in my pythons are locked up for hours on end. Now i have seen tails next to each other every so often lol or the males tail around the mid section of the girl but no actual copulation. So what do you think the chances are of my girl becoming gravid are?

That was me

Actually a fairly good chance. IF you've seen any courting or other indicators. Not just tails near each other, but the male's tail wrapped around the female (not necessarily at the right location) If the male is wrapping the female, he smells her in heat. Other signs are hemipenal plugs or sperm smears.

Even if you don't see anything, she could be gravid.

ahhh thanks good name for them lol i have been so busy lately that i havent been able to post reply or even browse any of the forums to much and i missed that one.

I thought the names were quite clever if I don't say so myself.

Adam and Eve begat Genevieve and the Addams family. You gotta love names like Lurch Fester and Thing for snakes.

yes yes you do well if no babies come ill just have to wait till next year and try again when i have high hopes for everyone i have this good feeling about next season for all my lil projects.
lol one more thing
when do you consider that a female is not gravid and will not be gravid any time that/this year so i know when to feed her normal meals again if she dont take?
thansk for all the input i gotta run now time to go clean the umpteen million cages and go get the lovley cockatoos nails clipped take care every1 and best of luck on the breedings

I had four last year that didn't take, they kinda went off feed but just didn't look gravid, still nice and thick, It's really hard to tell. I can see it since I've already had so many litters and have multiple animals to compare and see that difference. Not to worry if she doesn't take and you don't get babies, even the small meals will be all she needs to maintain her weight.

Think of it this way, a female that does give birth expends a huge number of calories on the babies and will need to replace those calories for her next breeding (not necessarily the next year). One that does not breed expends very few calories and can go months with no food and not lose much weight. Small meals would be all she needs to actually grow.
