I'd like to thanks everyone here who shared their condolences. I'd also like to share some off-topic good news...
My friend has offered me two female rats. The one is very sociable and friendly, whereas the other was intended to be a feeder and does not really enjoy socializing.
Either way I think I'll wait a week or so before I officially declare that I will take them in.
