Who is the person to talk to about an all black, large and tame snake? Hehe I know, kinda broad range there... I'm looking for an all black snake. On the larger side 5' ? That's full grown, tho I would like to get one as a baby to raise it on my own. My GF and I between us have um... 25 snakes. They are all boa constrictors and one burmese. hehe I'm looking for something a bit smaller now. I have my eye on a couple snakes.. leucistic southern pine, blood red corn... and well, I would also like to add a black into that range... so... any suggestions? Thanks all!

The smallest would be a mexican black king. Very neat 3 -4 ft snake.

The middle would be a black milk snake. These are cool because they start off as tricolor hatchlings and turn jet black. They get about 5 - 6 feet.

The bigegst would be an eastern indigo. They are large 6 ft active and hungry snakes. You might need a permit for em

All of these are on my wish list as i have been looking for a nice all black snake. personally I am going to go with the milk.

cheers

Not too nit pick, but my Black King female is easily 5 foot, and her mate is not far behind.

They get a lot bigger than most people think. I have posted my male several times so I won't now. Scroll down some and you can see.

My male is over 4 feet - and my 2006 neonate is pounding fuzzies at an alarming rate, I think she's ready for hoppers.

Great information! Thank you for the reply. I'm going to start doing some reading on all of them and the black pine. See what I can see and all that jaz. I will post back here when I make up my mind or if I have any specific questions on any of them. Thanks again!

Get a black milk snake (L.triangulum gaigae)
You can watch it change from a tri-colored snake into a glossy totally black snake that will get to the size you're after in a few years if well maintained.

How about a nice example of a black Pine? Stouter than a Black Milk or Mexican King (favorites)

CrimsonKing Mar 03, 2007 04:47 AM

Certainly a great option too. They are more stout for sure.
Maybe one day I'll get a pair.

I was gonna say option 4 black pine, might be tough to find a really clean animal with a sweetheart disposition though. I am interested in them myself.

Since the topic for this thread is "Black Snakes" I think almost anything is fair game, as long as its black, no?

In that case I'm gonna put in a plug for the Black Racer - they have a nice satiny look and can make great captives.

I also have a soft spot for the nigra Black Kings - excellent candidates.

Eastern Hognoses also come in an all-black melanistic morph.

Kings, Milks, Pines, Racers, Indigos, even Hoggies!

You can have a blast with all of 'em!
