Very odd finding.....

xblackheart Mar 02, 2007 11:05 PM

I have two corn snakes put together to breed. Both snakees have been bred before. I have not witnessed any breeding with these two, but today I found this (pictured below). It looks like a massacre. Neither snake has any injuries and does not appear painful. I have never had any blood left behind after a mating. Any ideas.....??

Well, now you can offically say that you have seen blood after mating!

I've seen blood after mating MANY times. It's USUALLY come from the female where it just seems the spikes on the hemipene scratched her up. This isn't always associated with a female that isn't ready to breed, so keeps crawling away from the male while they are locked up. Also, it doesn't seem to be more common with virgins than "experienced" breeders. It is possible that it is more common with larger males bred with smaller females, but I don't have enough personal data to support that possibility (or to refute it).

All of the above aside, I've never had THAT much blood following a breeding. It looks like you had a nose bleed in the cage! Since liquids smear on paper, it is likely that it LOOKS worse than it actually is - I hope. I don't keep my corns on paper, so I end up finding stained litter that doesn't "look" like much blood. That could be why yours looks worse.

Just watch for problems, and if none develops, I wouldn't worry.
Good luck,
KJ

I am pretty sure I found this very shortly after it was done. Most of the blood was still moist. It was my third corn lock up (that I know of), and one since. Both the male and female appear fine today, no swelling. I still have a few females that I do not have confirmed breeding on. One of those is the bloodred female that I have been looking forward to seeing babies from!!
the bearded dragons are due in about two weeks. I have another clutch that is due a couple weeks later. I had to seperate the male to stop him from breeding the females too much.
