Fleas on my Babies! They are rats and they have fleas

longtang Aug 11, 2003 09:58 PM

My rats have fleas! I sprayed some provent in there.

What do you guys do for fleas? I am paranoid about fleas becasue I believe that they are dangerous to human health.

Have you ever had fleas in your colonies? Do you treat all the colonies?

Pelase help

thx.

BTW, these fleas came from $.75 pups that I bought from Hamburg. They are now small rats because they have been nursing on the mom rat that i have.

I had the same fear of fleas on my rats not long ago. The post will be a bit ways down in this forum. But it happened that it was not fleas on my rats at all and what I did find was lice? (Smallish long red tinged bug that scurry near the skin.)

Since my boyfriend attracts every flea in the house (an other bugs) to bite him before they touch me, I am pretty sure the fleas I did have are gone after bug bombing the house with special flea bombs. Of course the rats were put in another room while the main house was being treated since that was where the fleas/bugs were. If you truely do have fleas, I suggest you also treat the area (cage and around) as well as any other animals that might be affected. I am still unsure how to treat a rat for fleas though since you are probably planning to feed them off eventually or soon to some reptile.

Good luck. Sorry couldn't be more help.

that is exactly what I saw on my rat babies. They are long tear drop shaped small things that crawled around on the fur of the rats.

So, I guess I have lice.

I sprayed the tank with Pro vent. I sprayed both rat cages. Do you think I should also spray the mice tanks?

thx.

What you could do is treat around the cages. If there is wood around them anywhere then treat it with a damp sprayed rag. I use Ovitrol plus flea spray but since it from a vet only it may be a pain for you. I get it because it is what my vet believes to be one of the safest and most effective flea killers. It kills bugs and eggs. Active ingredients are 0.27% Methoprene
0.20% Pyrethrins 0.37% Piperonyl Butoxiden and 0.62% N-octyl Bicycloheptene Dicarboximide You want a low % pyrethrins for rodents. Treat again in a week.
