Need Help!!! Leopard Gecko just layed 2 eggs

amixam98 Aug 11, 2003 10:21 PM

I don't know what to do and I didn't know she was pregnant. Any advices and suggestions would be helpful. The eggs are currently being covered in coconut bark by the mother. Should I leave it in the tank or should I take it out.

Take them out (dont rotate the eggs) and put them into either coconut mulch, dirt, or some vermiculite. Something similar will work as well, basically something that holds moisture so they dont dry out. Last time I checked, incubation temperatures are 82-84 but I could be wrong so if anyone knows otherwise, feel free to correct me. In any case, you will need an incubator to keep them in. A chicken incubator works well. If it has a humidity regulator that helps because otherwise you will need to monitor it yourself. I believe the hatch times are about 80 days but once again, I dont have the book near me. I do know that it is an overall easy process since we've done it dosens of times at work. Good luck.

First, was she in with a male? Females can lay eggs without being introduced to a male but these are infertile. If however she was in with a male, chances are they will be fertile and can be incubated. Remove the eggs, very carefully, don't rotate them. Place them in moist vermiculite, and place them in the incubator. 80-83 usually gives you mostly females, 83-85 yields a mix of sexes and 86-90, usually gives you mostly males. Incubation time can be from 45-60 days, although I hatched out two this year at 39 days.

Yes she was in with another gecko. Is it too late to take the eggs out. I will take it out when I get home from work. It's been about 24 hours.

As long as they have not dried out, they should be fine. Heck even if they are dented in, just bury them in the vermiculite and see if they will rehydrate. I hatched out one like that this year.
