i have a question for everyone who makes their own rat cages. Do you use 1/4" or 1/2" mesh? I have a set of plans and it says to use 1/3" but it is kinda hard to find.

I've build my rack with 1/2 wire, you can get the 1/3 at http://klubertanz.com

The reason for the preference for 1/3" mesh is that it will work for both mice and rats. 1/4" is ideal for mice but may be too small for rats to access food. 1/2" is good for rats but small mice have been known to get through the holes. Hope this helps.

Thanks, for the advice, I am only planning on having rats. But i am planning on feeding dog food and i was wondering if it would fall through the 1/2" mesh.

Here is a setup i have for alot of my bigger cages, it works great, this is the 1/2" and i just drop food through it. Variety works good besides just dog food, been ther done that.

It would depend on the brand of dog food.

1/2" is fine for rats. Get coated wire or it will stink really bad really fast and you can't get rid of the smell.

I made a 30x12x24h homemade cage out of 1/2" pvc coated wire from Home Depot and a sterilite underbed tub for the pan. Holds 3 rats comfortably.

Ive found its easier to just buy a decent sized powdercoated cage from martinscages.com
