Boiga d. dendrophila help please (long)

Royreptile Mar 03, 2007 08:00 PM

I'm pretty sure that the subspecies I have is B.d.dendrophila, due to the fact that the dorsal bands often meet at the spine and the bands also meet at the center of the ventral scales. I would like to establish a nice naturalistic habitat for it, and I would like some ideas from the more experienced keepers (than I)here. What would be a good size for the cage? Can they be kept in pairs? If so, how large should the cage be for a pair? I have heard that B.d.melanota is commonly found near rivers, is this also true with B.d.dendrophila? What is their natural habitat? Sorry I have so many questions, I'd just like to provide the best environment possible.
Also, the previous owner unfortunately neglected the snake,, because he was very busy with a new business. It is steadily gaining weight and hs no problem eating f/t chicks which I offer at night in an artificial nest. It is shedding right now, so that's a good sign. Once it is finished shedding and has gained some more weight I will post some pictures of it.
Thanks a lot. (sorry it's so long)

To be really sure it's B. d. denrophila, the loreal shields closet to the eyes are yellow while in melanota it's black.
They're not that demanding as long as you have a good supply of birds. For a large adult, a high arboreal enclosure would be good with foliage and branches for it to perch on. You could probably find out much more if you google it!

Thanks for the reply Hans! As I said, I think the snake is B.d.dendrophila, but to be sure I'll be posting pics here. Maybe you could give me a positive i.d. if I had some good pics. Anyway, the snake is doing great and eating well, yesterday it shed and I offered it a f/t chick which it ate. It is gaining weight so I'll post some pics by the end of the month. Keep your eyes open! Thanks again.
I may have to go out to Malaysia and look for some Boiga myself!lol
