Breeding Malagasy Giants?

c&f Mar 03, 2007 09:09 PM

Hi, I've read the info on hognose.com, and I'm just wondering if anyone that has had success with breeding Malagasy giants actually brumates them, or not? Just a curiosity considering where they come from! Any other info on the process of breeding would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx

I have been trying for the last 2 years!!! Someone I know said cool them like a colubrid, how-ever, i would rather they didnt breed than risk losing them, they are my babies!!!!

I cooled all three to room temp, which in my herp room is around 70 during the winter, they seemed to respond and as soon as I put them back together they got down to it!!!!

Wish I could see the pics, I have a WC pair, I'v been keeping for a month, I got them as unnwanted animals and was expecting a lot of trouble, they are great, eating well, nice and easy to handle. They are both a little skinny, but not for long.
As soon as they bout gain weight I'll put them together and see what happens.
I was told to cool then down as you would N American HN, scarry I would never even try. Glad to hear yours are breeding without very cold temps.

i would worm them if they are wc, thye will soon put on weight. Mine are mating, as they did last year, need to see if they will produce eggs, hopefully they will, you can see the pictures here:

I was curious about cooling because the info on hognose.com suggests cooling them down to 55F, which somehow doesn't seem safe to me. I would assume they may see temps as low as 65F in the wild, but of course I know little about their wild environment.

I'm going to see if I can get a couple of females and then I'll give it a go next year.

You mentioned that they bred but didn't produce eggs? I wonder if they still weren't cool enough?

I didnt let them drop much below 75 this year they have gone as long as 65 at times , but thta is as low as Im prepared to go!! I would be gutted if anything happenned to these guys. they mated for the last 2 years but produced no eggs. they are making with gusto at the moment, quite a violent looking affair!!!

I have also cooled my Gaeyi and modestus down to the same temperatures. So fingers crossed!

I'll be interested to know how you make out with getting some good eggs from them. I'm kind of surprised you didn't even get bad eggs, but of course one can never truely predict what will happen with any given captive reptiles, so keep those fingers crossed!

Thanks,
they havent laid eggs at all, but then they are only 4 years old so maybe they were too young, the smaller female is belting food down at present so fingers crossed, the gaeyi's have been down to it and im going to put together the modestus this week hopefully, waiting for the male to eat post hibernation.
