Off feeding question

sean1976 Mar 03, 2007 09:09 PM

For those of you with extensive experience with BRB's,

How long is normal for a male to go off feeding?

I've been keeping my pair seperated but they are in tanks near each other and my female never stopped eating but the male stopped about 4-6 weeks ago. He seems otherwise healthy and for at least part of that time he stayed abnormally often in the colder end of the tank.

The female on the otherhand about 3-4 weeks ago started downing 2 small rats at a time instead of her normal 1. I'm hesitant to throw her anything bigger then the "small" rats she's eating now as they are almost as big arround as she is but the mediums locally are much bigger then she is across. However every time after I open the feeding container after her first she looks up for where the second to wolf down is lol.

Anyways I was just curious about how long is normals to go off feeding for. Both of mine are arround 20-21 months old currently and in the 4-5 foot range although the female is starting to quickly outstretch the male in girth and slightly on length since their feeding changed.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Sincerely,
Sean

Males can go 3 or 4 months without showing any interest in food. Enjoy the money you are saving on rats.

I've also noticed males spending more time in the cool side of the cage during breeding season. I think they are trying to condition themselves.

Thanks for the response and information. I was hoping and assuming that was the case but was not sure since I've never been able to find a good resource for BRB information other then this forum and talking to breeders.

Sean,
...Females at the age yours is often will eat heavily putting on weight. I feed them pretty heavily at that age and just watch to see that they don't become obese. A good rule of thumb when feeding young BRB females is to try to get growth of 1 to 2 inches per month until they are 4.5 feet long and then one inch per month after that until they are 5.5 feet long.
