What makes a quality Irian Jaya?

Tomsey Mar 04, 2007 12:51 PM

Hello.
Was wondering what colors, patterns, etc you look for to be considered a high quality Irian Jaya.

I ask this because I was considering buying some captive hatched IJ.
Would you advise against purchasing CH?
Would you ever use a CH in your breeding program?
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is only my opinion, but CH (Captive Hatched) means most likley they are imported from a farm overseas, Nothing really wrong with that, from what we have found is the US Captive Bred babies tend to be better, and this is what I mean.

US Captive bred- Means most of the time the Sire and Dam that produced them where selected for certain characteristics, meaning might turn out better as adults.

What we look for in our Irian Jayas (Western Papuans) is reduced black, most breeders and keepers seem to be going in that direction. the less black the better, which means more of the tans, chesnuts, and browns come threw.

Like I said there is nothing wrong with CH, as long as they are well started and feeding well. And every person is going to give you a different idea of what makes a good IJ, but from what I see its reduced black, is generally what most people strive for.

Good Luck..

Thank you for the good info.
What do you think about breeding a snake that has more black (lets assume these CH snakes will have lots of black)with a high quality selectively (captive) bred snake with reduced black.
Is it possible that some of the babies will have the qualities of the nicer appearing breeder?
My goal is to produce nice looking IJ, but was thinking of these CH as possible breeders for new blood and, well, because they're cheap. LOL
Thanks.

There is a chance, but from what I have found, is most of the offspring will come out with qualities of both parents, So by breeding a Jaya with lost of black with one that has reudced black, the babies will most likely come out in between. The best results would be to try and breed two reduced black IJ's to get the best results of the offspring having reduced black, if that is what your going for. That is what we are going for, reduced black and high color, many breeders go for banded offspring, or Striped Offspring, which both can occur in a clutch.

From what I have seen, generally the offspring will come out like a mix of the two parents..
