New BRB... and a question

waspinator421 Mar 04, 2007 02:50 PM

Hello everyone! I got an adult male BRB last week, and he was in shed at the time. He finally shed today, so I took some pictures.

Yesterday, while he was still in shed, I noticed a small white thing on his left eye. I don't know if it was there when I got him or not, but that is when I noticed it. It may have been there the whole time, because I was trying not to disturb him for the first several days and wouldn't have noticed it. I thought it might've just been something that got stuck, and would come off with the shed. Well, it's still there.

Here are some pictures I took today. The thing sticks up off the eye a tiny bit. Any ideas what it could be? Should I make a vet appt?

IMO looks like scar tissue. Maybe from a feeder or even a mite. Unless it looks infected or changes, probably nothing to really worry about.

Did you unravel the shed and look at the eyecaps?

Thanks for your response, Dave.

The head part of the shed was all bunched up, so I don't know which eye was the left one. But one of the eyecaps on the shed is missing, and the other one looks clean. I checked him out, and it doesn't appear that he has a stuck shed on either eye.

Perhaps it is scar tissue. The previous owner says he is about 6 years old and captive bred, so it may have been from a live feeder or a mite. It doesn't seem to be bothering him, either.

Thanks for the info.... I'll keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get worse.

I scanned Mader and Frye and couldn't find anything. In the second picture, it looks like the pupil has dialated without affecting the lesion at all. This suggests it is on the ocular scale. My guess is that it will clear up within a few sheds.

I'd probably take the animal in to a vet anyway. Especially since it's a newly acquired snake. An all-around check up can't hurt.

I'd be interested in seeing how this progresses.
