Rhino iguana aggression

crzyflsrepdennis Mar 04, 2007 08:17 PM

Has anyone had extreme aggression between pairs of rhinos and what did they do. I have a pair that were together for a couple of years and then the female started attacking the male. She ended up ripping a good section of his neck. They were in a 10x10x8 concrete room. They have been seperated for about a year now. I was thinking of trying them again. Have some of you found anything like this. The male is now 12 and the female is 10.Im thinking of bringing them home from work and would like to see if anyone has suggestions for new caging ideas. Im in Virginia, so I cant house them outdoors all year round.
Thanks,
Dennis

It happens sometimes. As Females mature, I have found that they sometimes become moody, skitish and jealous. You might want to try adding more furniture to the setting. Make an obsticle course so that the male has lots of places to run and avoid being in sight of the female(visual barriers). Set up two separate hide boxes, basking sites, and feeding areas. The basking sites should not be in sight of one another. Good luck.

I reintroduced them in the males cage tonight to see how they would act. He is very interested in her, bobbing and licking her tail while she is very standoffish, hissing and hitting him with her tail. I left them together for about 10 minutes, figured I would end on a good note. I figured I would reintroduce in his territory. How does this sound? Do you have females that behave this way and will it subside over time as she gets used to him again or will he have to assert himself. She is a bit bigger than he is in the body too. Thanks for the help and hope you can enlighten me so they can do well together.

Sounds like normal behavior. My experience is that the female will not be receptive until May to July and only for about a two week period sometime during those months. If there is plenty of furniture so that they are not constantly looking at each other, you might keep them together. Otherwise, wait until the female is receptive. If you have a fenced in back yard, you can put them outside together during the heat of the day. It is not uncommon for breeding activity to happen when they are let out to free roam during the breeding season. The picture is a 7lb breeder loan male with a 9lb female -- the male does not need to be bigger. Good luck.
