naturalistic Honduran caging?

blueharlequin Aug 11, 2003 11:03 PM

Hey folks.
I used to keep treefrog vivariums many years ago, and now that my five year old Hondo female shouldn't breed again due to complications with being eggbound, I'm thinking of re-housing her in a large naturalistic aquarium environment. Has anyone ever done this? Any substrate suggestions? I love Carefresh, but the stuff is ugly and far from natural. And how could I replicate a humidity chamber without a tupperware tub? Any ideas are appreciated.

Hey Paul,

Bet ya those babies have started piping right?

As for the naturalistic set up for hondos, got to tell ya, I've tried it and gave it up after a few months. They are not the best candidate for this type of set up. First off, forget about any live plants as an adult will crush these in no time.

Your main problem will be with substrate. With such a high speed metabolism, keeping the substrate clean is quite a challenge. Best thing to do would be to go with any type of natural (cheap) substrate and change it often.

As for a humidity chamber, well I wouldn't want to ruin a beautiful mini rain forest with an ugly container in it. Just mist every other day and more often during shedding...

How are those babies man? e-mail me privately if you want...

Good luck
