They all want to be in the humid hide

vtec Mar 05, 2007 11:48 AM

I have a community 40 gallon breeder and I have 3 females and 1 male in it. One of my females is always in there and almost never leaves and the others I find in there all the time too but they come and go. The humid hide is roughly 3" wide by 6" long. Even with when there are only 2 leos in there they are kinda cramped, do any of you guys provide more than 1 humid hide to accommodate a group of leos? There are 8 hides altogether in my setup, the main warm hide is huge (4 or so can fit in it) and the others can house 2 or 3 leos comfortably. Is it necessary to have a heat pad directly under the humid hide or does it just have to be anywhere on the warm side? Thanks

I've found when you're keeping leos in a communal group you would be better off with multiple small humid hides as opposed to one huge humid hide. With a group of 4 geckos like you have, I would put 3 to 4 humid hides in the cage. In my groups of adult females, I like to have 1 per animal. The only exception would be if your breeding them, then I would only have 1 or 2 larger nesting boxes that would also double as humid hides.
You do need to have the humid hides on the warmer part of the cage. They don't need to be directly on the heat pad, but half on & half off should be ok.

I hope this isn't considered stealing someones thread (I'm super sorry if i am ) ) , but does anyone have any suggestions on how to make humid hides?

You can use basically any container (tupperware works well). You just have to cut a hole in it for them to get in and out and fill the bottom with some type of substrate, many people use vermiculite.

Use a cool whip container or kfc or whatever you have cut a hole in the side of it and you can use moss, papertowels, vermucilite and so on as to make it a humid hide. I use paper towels and just moisten several times throughout the day.

VTEC---for your post since this is yours! LOL.....I agree with Csherp here!! Very good guy and knows what he is talking about and i am not going to repeat him! haha
