Snake hooks on a Plane?

Peebee Mar 05, 2007 12:42 PM

I'll be traveling by air to FL later this year & want to take my stump ripper. Does anyone have any experience checking their snake hook through as baggage. If so, how was it incased & did you have any problems with the airline or security?

I brought my snake hook with me to Costa Rica and ther were no problems with checking it. I put it in between all of my clothes so it was pretty well cushioned; it made the trip just fine.

Check out this thread. You're not the only one trying to transport a stump ripper.

I've had my large collapsable hook in my check-in luggage without problem. I forgot to put my small, pocket hook in my check-in luggage, and had it on my carry-on luggage. One security guard took it out and looked at it, but seemed fine with it, so other than that, I haven't had an issue.

Was flying from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado (Amazon Basin) and could only bring a carry-on. I packed my collapsable hook in the carry-on. Upon boarding and getting my bags x-rayed, the security people got all excited about my hook. They said it was a weapon. After showing them a bunch of herp books, and explaining the real purpose of it, they eventually let me check it. They would not, however, let me carry it on.
