Over the last 30 years I have had a few bites.Last year I was hit by a Trans pecos copperhead. It rotted my finger off with a necrotizeing hematoma that spread in a couple of hours killing all flesh in its path. What I am saying is all bites suck. Most are very painful all should be avoided at all cost. The cost can be your life and or dismemberment or a 100,000. medical bill! What you ask is a very difficult thing to measure as all bites are like a finger prints,an everyones body reacts in diferent ways to venom . Simple fact they both hurt in a unimagineable way and that is a undisputable fact!

I agree that all bites should be avoided at all cost. i dont own hots and dont plan to get into them for several years, was more a curiocity question. and i understand that all bites are different. that said let me ask a question that might be a little more realistic to answer
what is the ratio of the each species giving a dry bite?

I remember seeing a ld50 chart that said if i recall corectly you have somthing like a 25% greater chance off dying from a pygmy. but personaly if your looking to get into hots i would recomend a popes pitviper, but thats judging from the one popes and one c head ive kept as my pope is an angle and my c head strikes at anything that moves. the down side to my recomendation is that antivenom for c heads is easier to come by and a more ornary snake should help you appy proper safety precautions

I dont belive there is a true ratio all snakes are not created to fit such standards.

as a very general answer from what i know i have seen streckeri-in fact, all species of pigmy rattler-both in the field and in captivity-and most if not all were pretty pugnacious/fiesty/nervous....also have seen lots of southern copperheads-again both in the field and in captive conditions-and they seemed a little less quick to strike in general,in fact some have seemed almost retiring,to a point at least.that being said i'd generally describe both species as fairly nervous.i understand pigmy rattler venom to be a somewhat more potent than that of contortrix, but on avg they have at least a slightly smaller body/head/venom output per bite.....of course all that has been said above by others holds true.i think way too many hot keepers are not suited to do so,but imho if i had to suggest one of those two species i'd say a copperhead would be a less bad choice.
