Incubation Query

kellybee Mar 06, 2007 10:19 AM

Guys I have room temp at home of about 22degrees C (71.6), and an incubator in the works, which I'm playing with in order to get it right.

I'm wondering, the highest temperatures I have managed to stabilise is 80.6 (27 degrees), if it were to drop a few degrees overnight, do you think this would be ok? I realise that lower temps mean longer hatching times, however some say not to drop below high 70's and others say low 70's

What do you guys do?

It sounds good to me, but I haven't had a lot of experience. on Eve's website there is lots of information on all collard lizard care. Hope it helps. www.suncharmers.com

Thanks Dean,

I was wondering that although I have stabilised the temps at 80degrees, Eve, for example says to keep them at high 70's at the lowest, but if in unusual circumstances it drops lower than that, will I lose my eggs?

For example: I have locked the window in that room so my other half can't leave it open, but if he left the door open all day and the landing window open, and it dropped to say, 72, what are their chances?

I do not understand why you can only get it to stabilize at 80 degrees . If you have it in a room that is cooler than the temperature you need, than it should go up to the temp you want, but I'm not sure what your even using. Give us some info so others can jump in and give their thoughts.

What kind of incubator do you have?
What are the normal/average temps in the room it's in?

I would not want to have mine drop or stay in the low 70's for any length of time. Although I have heard if you do get a surprise drop in temps, it would be better to have it happen on the cooler side than TOO hot.

I use a hovabator and get it to usually stabilize about 83- 85 range.

I've used a small aquarium with a heater that has a built in thermostat, enough water in the bottom to cover the heater but no lid so it wont get too humid, and placed it in a spare viv so that it isn't draughty. Lots of people here successfully hatch lizards this way and it beats paying £90 for a hovabator (which I should be able to get cheaper from Hamm but this is a backup incase they dont have any).

Funkymonkey also uses this method to hatch collareds but he is skiing in canada so I cant bend his ear about his til next week, lol

oh okay, yes people do it here also with the water/heater, but I never have so I am not a good person to talk to about it.

I did not think you were using a hovabator when you said you were having problems getting over 80.

I'm sure Funky will be back in plenty of time to help ya out.
