Should I put him down?

bmulcahy Mar 06, 2007 09:19 PM

I've had two geckos in my class for 4 years and they were adults when I got them. One died about a month ago and the other is on his way. I believe it is because of old age. He doesn't eat anymore and he sheds every 3-5 days. As a result the sheds have covered his eyes and he is basically blind. I give him water every morning with a q-tip and you can see how his tail has shrunk ( I am assuming he is gettin energy from the fat reserve). Today he started to bleed as he was removing another shed. I cleaned him up, but he is still bleeding a little. I have no idea what to do! I just want to make his last days as peaceful as possible. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Brian

Sorry to hear about all that. Always sad when a pet is on it's way out. Personally, I'd euthanize it if it seems to be doing poorly and appears to have lost interest in life. Always a tough call. I don't envy you at all. I wish you the best, and good luck with your decision.

Did you ever try getting the shed off his eyes? How is the gecko's tank set-up? The bloody shed thing is a little wierd..is he scraping himself on something in the cage trying to get shed off that he can't moisten up with a humid hide?

I have pulled the shed off his eyes at least 10 times. As it happened more often and more often, I must of missed some. Now his eyes are covered shut. In essense he is blind. The bleeding came from him ripping the shed off and he pulled some skin. I trimed it the best I could. He is still active - he just doesn't eat. I give him water daily on a q-tip, He has a nice set-up in a vision cage. I use a UVA and UVB light, under tank heater, and he has lots of space.

Can I feed him baby food or something with a syringe? I will try anything.

Thanks for any advice!

Brian
