getting started with water monitors

pedrobali Mar 07, 2007 04:55 AM

Hey guys, I just got my first monitor, i'm french I live in Bali. I'm sure this'll make all of u guys jealous here juveniles cost less than 10$. And theyre very healthy, at least mine is. It's small prabably about 20cm with tale. Got it yesterday, it's captive bred for sure. very tame I was actually surprised. Good and energetic not sick just lets u hold it, and not scared doesn't try to bite. I have experience with iguanas, non venomous snakes, geckos of all kinds and skinks of all kinds. Since I live in Bali where there are so many reptiles I spend my time catching them, studying them and then letting them go.I have it in a big enough enclosure. But, apart from the proexotic site I can't find much about captive care. Here in bali theres not much choice on food, justcrickets and fish, But, tryin to stay away from the fish now. I also cant get to a vet as there are none, and cant get any vitamin supplements for now, might take a month. This guy is very healthy, no scars and not much stress, well, i'm not at all worried for him and just asking for advice, maybe could u guys give me a routine to follow: how many crickets, how many times a week, haw many times a week to soak him and stuff like that. Well, for the light and heat don't need to worry as they come from here hehe. Well that's about it. And I know it's vertually impossible to sex at that age, but its got small bulges and pores so to my guess it's a male, although not sure.
Thanx for all the help you can give me!

Pedro

feed as much as it will eat. properly kept, it is nearly impossible to overfeed a baby monitor. but that is assuming a great setup and great temps : )

the enlarged femoral pore trait is in iguanidae/iguana males, not in varanidae.

Well, I thought it was for all lizards as all lizards I have kept so far be it from leopard geckos to iguanas have had it, sorry for my mistake. Anyway, thanx for the replies. I gave mylizards a soak properly respecting the care sheet info. I also arranged the cage better. As, yes over here we keep the reptiles in cages. I find it better as they can climb and they have open air and uv light. I place my cage over the gfarden so he steps on grass. And so far it has been a success. If there are any thoughts about cages please be welcome to say. Today , I tried feeding it crickets but it wasn't hungry I guess yesterday i mustve fed him about 10 so it's understandable. Held him a lot today. He's never tries to bite or defend himself. He just tries to run away when inside my hand and it takes him a few seconds to settle down. Not afraid of my hand when in the cage nor of me. Thanx for your help. And please feel free to post more, remember I need all the help and info i can get. Thanx. I would definantly have to say so far the best reptile i've kept, for those not sure about getting them.

I wouldn't dismiss them totally.

I have noticed on some of my monitors to be a difference in the two pores just before the vent. Either via a lack of or one being more prominent, or some can be felt while others smooth. Of course this is only on some species and the animals I keep so not sure how well it works all the time.

These are of course a bit different then femoral pores as seen on iguanas, beardies, uros, etc..

Hi Jody, your absolutely right, but most would not know them for a tick, so what good is telling them???? hahahahahahahahaha

The problem is and has been, the fine folks asking how to sex them do not have the experience to sex them even when explained how. The point is, it takes repeated after repeated experience.

So, hows it going? hahaha Cheers

Well, when I thought I was lucky I had such a good monitor. My brother opens the cage and forgets to close it so when I come home from school. Woops no more monitor! good thing I didn't spend 35$ on it. Well, yesterday I got myself a baby reticulated python and it's just as amazing. I can tell you I'm never gonna let my brother near that cage! Good luck to you all!
