Silkworms and mulberry leaves

eppon Aug 12, 2003 12:28 AM

Where can I buy mulberry leaves for silkworms? Or does anyone know of any online sources that sell mulberry saplings or seeds?

I would suggest you go to a nursery and see if they have any mulberry trees. It is likely they will. You may also have the option to chose between fruiting and non-fruiting type. The ones I have seen are about 7-10 feet tall in bucket pots. The only problem is, you can't feed a bunch of silkworms from the tree because it won't have many leaves. You can buy one and plant it and maybe use some sparingly from it and collect most from more adult trees in the area. Once you get used to spotting mulberry trees, you will probably see them everywhere and find a few places you can collect from. Good luck.

Here, they spring up as weeds all over the place. The birds eat the berries, potty and up comes an new tree. I can't walk a block without finding a tree. Just look around. I don't know where you are but I'm sure you'll find some.

By the way, the fruit only comes on second year growth. The berries can be very messy and it stains, horribly. If you always cut back the tree in the fall, every year the growth is 1st year again, which means no berries.
