Rescue sick leo

Shellabelle1980 Mar 07, 2007 09:00 AM

The local petstore has what they call an albino leopard gecko that was sick that they have been giving medication to that will be put up for adoption . . . I don't know what the sickness was or how it was being medicated . . . I'm interested in adopting this guy (or gal) but the only reptile I have is a bearded dragon, and I've never had a leopard gecko . . . I've read several care sheets, and I know what I need for supplies, but I would definately appreciate any advice from any leo experts out there . . . where he was sick, I want to do everything right so that he lives a healthy long life!! Thanks for any info!!

There is 2 links you can check out.
1. 20l
2. 2hides 1 humid hide 1 cool hide
3. substrate such as---paper towels, newspaper, tile, slate, I would not use sand. Leos can get impacted and i would especially not because he was ill.
4. Lid for pure calcuim to go in with NO D3 should be in tank at all times as well.
5. waterdish
6. some prefer little dishes for mealies, silkies.
I feed crix as a staple and mealies and waxies as treats.
7. Temps should be 85-90 hot side and 70-75 cool side. I use a red bulb and a UTH. Leos need belly heat more then anything. Also red bulbs don't hurt there eyes verses the UVB bulbs which can. (That is why they tend to hide till the light goes off) Also they are nocturnal but some will come out during the day with the red lights.

Good luck and if you need anything else please ask us that's what we are here for!!

Thanks! I really appreciate the info! I'm going to get the leo tonight, so after I have more info on how he was sick I'll post again in case there's anything else I should be doing . . .

Thanks again!

One more thing - bearded dragons normally have cryptosporidium in their digestive tract, and it comes out in their feces. Do not deal with anything in your leo's tank after handling your dragon or anything in its tank, crypto kills leos, so be sure to wash your hands *VERY* thoroughly between the two lizards.
