What amount of food do you feed?

chris jackson Mar 07, 2007 10:48 AM

While I have worked with snakes for 30+ years, I have never stayed with Burms or Retics beyond the 11-12' range before selling them since large food items (rabbits) are hard to locate in So. Cal. I have wanted to get a trio of some of the albino retics for years and would like to take a serious shot at keeping them and breeding them through adulthood.
I was hoping some of the folks with long term experiences with keeping these guys could give me some ballpark monthly food amounts you feed your males and females once they reach say 9-10' for males and 13-14' for females. I use those figures just to estimate APPROX. minimum breeding size as I know they can continue to grow significantly past those dimensions. I assume that they can be put more on a "maintenance" diet than a "growth" diet in that size range.
I hope to use very large rats and rabbits (probably from RodentPro) since other food items are not really possible/practical.
Any feedback on food requirements is greatly appreciated!

this may sound too simple, but i feed my retics when they are hungry... they are good at letting me know when dinner time is.

i feed g-pigs and rabbits... the big girls get rabbits.

seems like they are happy with feeding about once a week, or every other week. i feed them until they are full. in the winter time all my retics eat less. in the summer its a rabbit buffet.

you might look around where you live to find local rabbit breeders. they are usually more than happy to sell you their meat rabbits for a reasonable price.

every state has a rabbit breeders association. try and contact them. best bet is to be hush hush about what your plans are until you find someone who doesnt mind selling their rabbits to someone who is gonna feed them to snakes.
