I personally use glass terrariums. Glasscages.com

So I'll tell you the disadvantages. Shipping is very expensive if you can't pick them up from one of the shows they go to. Takes a lot of watts to heat a terrarium with a completely open top. Heavy.

Advantages. Least expensive if you can pick them up. Easiest to clean. Nice looking.

I also like Customcages.com they are Melamine cages. They are used by a lot of breeders and are stackable. You can also buy matching stands. They are the least expensive delivered that I have seen. This may be where I turn in the future.

LLLReptile sells vision cages. These are molded polyethylene enclosures. Certainly the lightest and probably easy to clean too. It just seems that I am always making changes and these cages don't seem real conducive to that. But again I have only seen them at shows.

I tried www.showcages.com but it came back not found. So I googled it and found references to it but no site. Maybe someone can offer some help or information on this.

Maybe, Showcase Cages (www.showcasecages.com). I have one right now, and I plan to get more. They are very light, easy to clean, and durable. Plus they have great stacking options, and have many advantages over cages with internal lighting, as opposed to their external lighting cages. Very nice cages!

Funny their web site wouldn't come up last night but does this morning.

I like those cages. But is their really enough light from just 1 incandescent bulb and the fluorescent? Seems like it would be dark in there. And then your only option at night for heat is a heat pad? Right?

I use a 40 gal breeder tank for my beardie. I also have one in a 55 gal tank as well. You could use heat tape instead of an UTH but not sure what you prefer.

Lighting doesn't seem to be a problem for me. If both the incandescent and fluorescent are used it lights the cage up pretty well. Also, I think their 60" model has two spots for incandescent lighting. I guess it just depends on personal preference, all of the cages mentioned have their pros and cons but I really like the showcase cages.

yeah...those cages look nice...but...for the price????

what I would do is...take their specifications and draw something up, go to a hardware store...you could buy one of those battery power kits (comes with circular saw, drill etc.), all the materials you'll need (wood, plexiglass, light fixtures etc.)

then build a 4' X 2' X 2' cage and still have $200 dollars left over...plus you get tools!

if you have troubles drawing up plans, just ask questions here...we'll help!

Well, I checked out the Showcages and even considered buying one. But, their 48" Long by 24" wide cage is only 18" High. The cutout for the basking light is 8" tall inset into the cage. This leaves only 10" below the light for the basking spot, substrate, etc. I found this hard to believe since it seems a design flaw to me and all of the other sizes are 24" tall so I emailed them. They confirmed that this was correct. I think that it would be fine for breeders that often don't have furniture in their cages. But would never work for me.

Something to consider.

well who do u recommend

BDlvr Mar 08, 2007 04:06 PM

Well, I wish I had all the answers. I am searching as well. I need a solution ASAP as you do too. I had real hope for the showcages you mentioned. I researched them not so much to help you but because I need something too. Guess if I had to make a decision, this moment I'd go with custom cages.

I have a dialog going via email with show cages now and if they will produce a 48" x 24" x 24" high in the near future I will go with them. But it is highly unlikely that they will design and build on my request. Sorry.

Vision cages are the same style. Maybe theirs are more suitable. They just don't have enough design specs. to peak my interest.

I'd be interested in what you decide.

cagesbydesign.com has a nice 48 x 24 x 24 High Enclosure too.
