Update on Leo Rescue

Shellabelle1980 Mar 07, 2007 06:42 PM

Wow! He's bigger than I thought he'd be! He's about 7 inches . . . the petstore said that he'd stopped eating, so they separated him from the others . . . now he's supposed to be eating fine, but won't touch crickets, just mealworms (they were also giving him waxworms to try and fatten him up)He hasn't eaten for me yet, of course, he's only been in his new home for not even an hour yet! His eyes and nostrils are clear, and he has energy: he's already explored the tank. He has the recommended supplies (thanks again Leolady!).

Questions:

1) He's skinny . . . are waxworms and mealworms a good way to fatten him up? His tail base is thinner than his neck.

2)Should I only feed him at night as he's nocturnal?

Thanks eveyone! Wish me luck on my first Leo!

Your very welcome!

Mealies are an ok staple for leos. I would let him settle in and not mess with him at all for about a week. I would offer crix and mealies. Whenever you can. I feed about 10 crix to everyone in the morning and then when i get home from work i will try and feed some more if they didn't eat them then they get no more. Or i will feed maybe 2-3 mealies. They tend to eat more during the night. Also as you get her into a feeding schedule things will be a bit wacky at first. I would also not feed too many waxworms or too often as they will get addicted to them and eat nothing but and will cause major health problems. I feed waxies about 1 time every 2 weeks. They each geta bout 5-7 waxies and that's it.

I also have 1 gecko that only eats mealies and she is 97g and growing! I have 2 that only eat crix. The rest eat both! haha Good luck!! Hope all goes well!!
